I didn't count but I think there are around 35-40 kids between the feral kids and the kids from the lab. Assuming all the females are fertile and there's a 50/50 ratio so there would be 15 to 20 couples. Is that enough to re-populate without inbreeding? Are there other "abortions" out there in the world?
shareAnother poster put out the pdf with the unreleased ending from the book. In it they say the girl ends up having children. That 3rd generation only needs 1 to 2 pieces of meat a day and doesn't sleep. They also absorb knowledge at a ridiculous rate. Groups of the second generation have gathered in different parts and have also begun learning and creating a small government. Additionally any 1st generation zombies are herded into abandon building where they are fed and allowed to "fruit" releasing more spores. Also occasionally those 1st gen zombies breed, creating more 2nd gen zombies who are then cared for by the new community.

There is possibly enough of them to survive. Cheetahs had thier population decline to about that level at one point (I beleive it was 13 individuals), and are now in thier thousands.
They do suffer significantly from inbreeding related issues however.
