Meat. Didn't we see melanie eating cats and birds just as we do? After everyone gets turned into one of them, i think they can be a much evolved superior race. Melanie said she could hold breathe till 1000 counts. isn't that amazing!
We're supposed to take there's multiple group of second generation hungries scattered all over the planet.
I read the Epilogue (of the book this movie is based on) and it said Melanie & Co. develop a No-Need-for-Meat trait, maybe because of the fungus.
They get minerals right out of the environment.
And Justineau is teaching them through the plastic walls of her cell, while having children of her own.
And the third generation, Melanie's children and that, all get to have no need for meat and be extremely intelligent.
