Haters

Haters haven't seen the movie, won't see the movie, but they attack it because they think it's about gun control. It isn't. It's about D.C. lobbyists, the vast majority of whom are only in it for the paycheck and the chance to show their colleagues and adversaries how much smarter and more deceitful they are. In short, not for or against a cause; just showing how it's all just a game.

AMEN ?

It even ditches the whole gun control topic towards the end

Haters can't and won't see past the gun control element. They aren't open to the possibility that the film is good and it takes on a bigger picture. It's a smart and sophisticated thriller - and dumb people don't like smart movies. However, it's also very much a crowd-pleaser, with some exciting twists and turns along the way. It's a masterfully written and crafted film - given the fact it attracted such an incredible cast and filmmaker is a testament to that. Fortunately, it's clear to anyone who's seen the film when someone who hasn't is bashing it for entirely illegitimate reasons. It just makes those people look lazy and ignorant and the ones with the real agenda. They are so threatened by any notion that could challenge or enlighten them, they'd rather resort to name-calling and passing off reductive arguments that bear no real cogency or merit. The film's triumphant. It's just geared more toward the intelligent, open-minded and tasteful crowd.

Truth.

Why would you say "it isn't" when the cast and the filmmakers insist that it IS??

I'm very curious.

Here's a recent article that features an interview with Jessica Chastain about her character, the movie itself, and the politics behind it -- that recently appeared in "The Los Angeles Times":

She and Madden said in person that it's about D.C. lobbying and one lobbyist in particular. The film is about HER and the lengths she goes to in order to win and the lengths congressmen go to destroy her. The issue could've been anything--didn't have to be gun control legislation. It isn't about gun control per se.

Here's an excerpt from the article. Notice the first reason Chastain gives when asked what drew her to the project in the first place. Now, you can always insist that an anti-gun agenda wasn't a major theme of this movie, but look at the logical contortions you have to go through in order to make that argument. So why not just acknowledge the truth: That there are movies with a progressive slant, movies with a conservative slant, and movies that are completely apolitical, and MISS SLOANE belongs squarely in the first category.

Here's the excerpt:

Q: What were your initial impressions when you first read the script?

CHASTAIN: I was excited by the role because I was really interested in the gun debate, and why we have so much gun violence in the United States. I was very interested in how our political system works, and why it feels like there's a lot of money, but nothing's getting done. Most of all, though, I was really excited by the character because she really confronts all gender stereotypes we have. She's a fantastic role ... it's complicated, because she's a flawed character. But we can still root for her because she's human, and it's OK to see female characters be human.

So many people are probably rating this a one even if they haven't even seen it.

One of the tag lines in the commercial is "The movie the NRA doesn't want you to see".

Yeah, it's dumb to insist this movie has no political agenda when of course it does. So why are people lying about this? Why don't they just own up to it and say, "Yes, the movie has an agenda. Some movies do, and this one does. Deal with it."

And leave it at that.

But they can't do it.

Then again, maybe they aren't lying. There's an old expression about fish not knowing that they're wet, because they're born in the water, live in the water, and die in the water.

Water is all that they know, so it all feels perfectly normal to them.

Thus, for the Left, it is customary to regard certain political positions as normal and mainstream (perceiving climate change as an urgent life-threatening emergency is one example of this) and to regard anyone who disagrees with those positions as "weird."

So movies that take certain left-wing political positions are, to the Left, not political at all. They are just normal. Mainstream. Presenting facts and ideas the way they really are.

Again: Progressives are fish who don't know that they're wet.
