It Only 2 Grossed Million Opening Weekend!?

I blame the ads and promotion for this movie, they've been terribly vague, the tv ads that I haves seen gave little indication what this movie was, and did not do a good job if generating interest. I usually like political thrillers but the ads for this have left me feeling like I will catch it when it comes to netflix, there are so many other movies that have caught my eye now.

Passengers has good TV ads, they introduce the two main characters, tell you clearly what problem they face, and then end with a hook: that the spacecraft is broken on purpose that they are going to figure out why.
That will get me to drive 45 minutes to the closest theater.
A movie where they can barely tell me what it's about and are too chicken to play up that it's apparently an anti-gun lobby movie (of the three ads I've seen for it only one even mentioned guns) will not get me driving to the theater despite the fact that I love Sam waterson, and Jessica Chastain is good too. If this was a jennifer connelly movie though, I'd be there opening day regardless of how crappy the ads were.

It was in limited release from November 25, and then a wide release on December 9th.
