Seriously?

What's with Robert DeNiro being in all these terribly beyond mediocre comedies?

This sounds like a book I read in elementary school (third or fourth grade, I think) - I found it in the classroom bookcase and read it in about an hour (it was one of those short kid's novels). This happened close to fifteen years ago, but I don't know when the book was actually written. From what I remember, it was a lot of fun - I was really amazed that they let the grandpa say "War is hell!" at one point (I didn't know at the time that it was based on a quote from Gen. Sherman), and the ending was really sappy but not necessarily bad. This sounds like it could be a fun movie if they don't try to fill it with toilet humor (which I don't recall in the book) or other dumb stuff.

Does De Niro REALLY want to play another Grandpa character?

Does he have a tax bill due?

I think this movie will suck, but c'mon, man, what do you want? That he will play grandsons at his age? he's almost 73.

Nowhere close to seriously. Under the title you'll see the word "comedy" and that should clue you in to the film's intentions.

Am I happy to see this dynamic actor lending himself to what will very likely prove to be inferior material? Obviously not. But there aren't many parts written these days for anyone over the age of 35. After 70 you've got KING LEAR, KING LEAR and, uh well, KING LEAR. Thank goodness he doesn't make a fool of himself in romantic comedies and action movies written for someone half his age. And THE INTERN more than made for the "buy the grocery" movies like NEW YEAR'S EVE.

Older actors have a very difficult time gaining good roles in excellent movies that are mass-marketed to the public. De Niro is a victim of that just as Al Pacino, Susan Sarandon, Sally Field, Christopher Walken and so many others are. It seems that the stage or television is the only place where the skills can be put to any consistent use. But to key the check rolling in, you do what you have to do.
