Season Five Episode One thoughts

I think this show is dangerous since it doesn't seek to unite people. Instead, Bell just complains about white people. The show deals with serious topics so I don't understand why a college dropout comedian is hosting. I always wondered why Bourdain was allowed to travel the world and issue numerous unqualified opinions.

Without providing evidence, Bell claims that US institutions are set up to help white people and keep black people down. The EEOC was established in 1965 to prevent discrimination at the workplace and the civil right acts of 1964 provided protection against and remedies for discrimination.

Bell even blames racism for infant mortality rates of blacks being seven times greater than whites. Black pregancies are more difficult and I would argue that genetics/biology are more to blame than racism. Both Serena Williams and Beyonce had difficult pregnancies and they're rich megastars with access to the best medical care.

One lady complains about her zip code not having opportunities but did it ever occur to her to MOVE????? If you are in a crappy neighborhood, you need to leave STAT.

Bell and Sara Sidner then slam anti-immigrant policies as racist. I disagree with them. The US already has a high unemployment rate so it doesn't make sense to bring in unskilled immigrants who will compete with citizens for jobs. I don't mind skilled immigrants but I do object to allowing unskilled immigrants from underrepresented countries.

Bell's mom is interviewed and she states that there is a backlash every time black people make progress. The apple didn't fall far from the tree. After watching this episode, one would
think that black people can't succeed in the USA but I strongly disagree. There are plenty of opportunities in the USA but you have to work.
