Why wasn't this movie as successful as it could have been?

I think it over-relied on nostalgia from the original move, rather than creating a compelling story.

The mini-marshmallowmen were just corny. Kind of like the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi

None of the characters were funny or compelling. I realize that that the focus on child actors was likely inspired by the success of Stranger Things, but perhaps due to unoriginality, poor storytelling, or overuse of CGI, it just didn't draw me in.

I did like when the original Ghostbusters showed up at the end.

GB2016 took the shine off a 3rd film. Had there been no reboot or had GB:AL come out in 2016 instead the box office probably would've been bigger (similar to the way the 2003 Hulk impacted 2008 Hulk)

The kiddie characters - the pitch was obviously Spielberg/Goonies meets GB but yeh it all felt abit forced bc of Stranger Things (and maybe 'It')

PAUL RUDD SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE THICK OF THE GHOST ACTION WITH THE KIDS NOT RUNNING AROUND WALMART AND GETTING HUMPY IN THE DESERT.
