CAFE Society ***1/2 out of ****

Really enjoyed this and wrote about about it here:

Excerpt:

Haunted by a dream of a life that never was; Café would really make a great, romantic “what could have been” double feature with Scorsese’s Age of Innocence.

Nice review. Many I've come across here on IMDb and in person, have criticized his directing as of late. Perhaps such ones do so because they are comparing his recent films to the films he helmed when he was at the top of his game, such as Manhattan, Annie Hall and Hannah and her Sisters. So as much as I enjoyed Cafe Society, I won't go as far as to say it was in the same league as his best.

But still, that's not good enough of a reason for Allen to fold up his director's chair. The 80-year-old has been directing full length feature films for the past 50 years. And during the past 45 years, like you mentioned in your review, he has averaged one full-length feature film per year. Not many active directors, if any, can boast of such an accomplishment. So it would be unrealistic for some to expect him to churn out Oscar caliber films each and every year for such a long duration of time, since no one can or does.

I'm just glad he hasn't chosen to rest on his laurels, in the sense of retiring from directing or slowing down, as other directors who have earned the distinction of being considered as one of the greatest Hollywood directors of all time have done once they get into their twilight years. He has made three films in the last five years, Midnight in Paris, Blue Jasmine and Cafe Society which have received a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so why slow down if you ask me?

reply

Yes, it's good that he has not slowed down because he has four wondrous movies (Melinda and Melinda, Vicki Christina Barcelona, Midnight in Paris, and Blue Jasmine) to his credit after some directors would have quit with failures such as Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Hollywood Ending, and Anything Else. And a couple of other of his films (Match Point and Cassandra's Dream) were very well done but such dour departures.

Completely agree - I actually think Match Point is one of my favorite Allen films. (I also secretly enjoyed Hollywood Ending and even Anything Else, but I saw them in theaters with my grandma when I was quite young, so I am somewhat nostalgic.)
