Bolger's turn as the babysitter was a protean tour de force. In the span of the first half of the film she's equal parts Lolita, Mary Poppins, and Mommie Dearest. It's a pity the second half of the film couldn't play off the wonderful tension/acting in the first half. Anyway, thoughts? I gave it a 5/10.
I gave it an 8. But I agree, it started out really strong, but then started to fizzle quickly. The writers obviously forced the slightly "happy" ending. It didn't seem natural, and seemed really off, especially after all the expert planning the Emelie & co. started off with then all of a sudden they just "forget" a plan. Like there was more than enough time for the guy to go to the house, pick up Emelie and Chris and take off, but he stayed and watched the mom & dad have dinner then smash into their car for no reason and especially when it resulted in his death. If it was to slow them down, he would have had a better plan. Then Emelie to stand behind the car she knew was going to reverse... yeah, just stupid. The writers should have let the "bad guys" win.
The bad guys almost always win when the baddie is female. i thought this was going to go against trope and have the male child outwit and kill the female baddie as the opposite is always true in horror but they pussied out at the end and had her survive like most female baddies unless they are up against a female hero.
