So what exactly did happen in this movie?

At the begining we see the real Anna get abducted by a man and woman. You couldn't make out the man, and you only heard the female drivers voice. Then a woman by the name of Emelie shows up at a family home posing as a abysitter named Anna. But what was her objective? It all seemed rather confusing, because throughout the movie we seen a man spying on the parents during the evening after they left the home. And as it turned out, the crazy Emelie was in cahoots with him. It seemed like Emelie's goal may have been to abduct the younger boy. And then at the end, it was made to look as if Emelie had been run down by Jacob in the car, yet it looked like her running at the end of the show from whom or to where unknown. The show sort of intrigued me throughout, I just hate when it all never seems to make sense in the end.

In the beginning, Emelie and her boyfriend kidnapped Anna in order for Emelie to pose as her and gauge if Christopher was her "cubby".
Emelie's baby had died and she had a mental breakdown after it. She then met her boyfriend who she tried to have a baby with but they kept failing. They began a search for the perfect child to kidnap and raise as their own.
Emelie then poses as Anna and her boyfriend keeps watch on the parents to ensure that Emelie has time to do everything.

Didn't you watch the movie? She lived alone with her baby and slept on her left side on a sofa with her 'Cubby' between her back and the back of the sofa. One night she accidentally suffocated it. She went crazy and met someone even more disturbed: her 'skinny hyena' boyfriend. The two of them looked for an abduction victim candidate. In her book with the drawings she said her uterus was twisted and she was unable to conceive again. Go back and watch this scene again. It is where she reads the book to the boy.

There was a suggestion Emelie's older, male partner was not pressuring her for another child because he was desperate to become a dad again. The man in the spectacles sacrificed his life by ramming the Thompson's car not just to buy her more time in the closing moments, but more as a reckless, suicidal, terrified escape from a more painful fate.

A brief scene in one of Emelie's flasbacks shows her and the father of her dead child being brutalised by heavies that seem to be gangland figures. Perhaps the obscure man in glasses was beholden to a child trafficking ring and forced to produce or procure children at their demand.

This makes the film far more disturbing than first appears.

The only flashbacks I recall were during the story time scene. There were no depictions of the father of Emelie's dead child or any gangland heavies.

And if the obscure man in glasses were associated with a child trafficking ring (which was also where I believed this story was headed), then it would only make sense to kidnap all three children while leaving Cubby for Emelie. The writer should have gone this route to make more plausible why they would have been in cahoots in the first place.

The film's pretty weak.

It's a serviceable film rather than a weak one but admittedly, it's not great.

Therefore, I won't exhort you to view it again. However, there really was a brief flashback where the man in glasses was being beaten next to a couple of parked cars as Emelie cringed in the background. There was no explanation offered and I based my speculation on him not being a warm character about whom one could infer a desire for fatherhood.

I've no experience in such matters but I can imagine that it's easier to abduct one child rather than three.

Ah ok, I'll take your word for it and perhaps revisit the scene when I can.

The couple itself seems pretty implausible to me too. It doesn't seem as if she manipulated some loser guy into following her twisted plan, or that they were some deranged criminal couple á la Bonnie and Clyde of the Honeymoon killers either. And if he were engaged in child trafficking, and at risk of physical harm if he couldn't deliver, then I have to wonder why he would conspire to kidnap only one child for his girlfriend--a child from which he wouldn't even have been able to profit.
