Did I miss something, Who was he, was it a snake bite from the bloke who kept snakes previously?

Are you thinking of the escaped prisoner from the police van?

He injured his hand in his escape from the van, the injury got worse (infection), and he finally had to saw it off.

No snake bite - he was in the prisoner transport van driven by the epileptic cop who had a seizure while driving. The van rolled over on its top with several prisoners handcuffed to the the inner cab. The guy you're referring to was able to slip his hand out of his cuff, severely damaging it in the process. He was u able to treat the wounds on his hand and it became badly infected. That's why he had to cut it off.
