And then he led the wife to believe that the daughter was missing all those years?
That's apparently what happened. He was a nut and wanted to keep her home. Dead or alive.

I thought Taylor killed her but he found her on the road and brought her body back, that's why the map in his jeep had all the dates where Taylor had been? I'm not sure, the sound wasn't great on that episode for me.
