How could the director of The Apostle have directed this?

Glad it was on TV for free. Duvall is such a great actor and he isn't bad in this. But first of all, it's kind of a rip-off of Sayles' Lone Star and then he cast his wife in the female lead. She is not an actress and she cannot act. I'm sure he's delighted to have a wife so much younger than he is, pity she has to be one of the least interesting "actresses" ever.

If Duvall was blind to this fact, you'd think Franco (who is terrible in this) or Hartnett might have pointed it out.

Embarrassing all around.

Speaking of which, where the hell is John Sayles? The last I heard of him he had done this terrible thing about a defunct blues club called the Honeydipper. He and Bob Duvall can go have a drink somewhere and cry in their beer.

One of the negative reviews is by someone who says he's never seen any of Robert Duvall's other films. I was going to post a review in response, but figured IMDb would reject it, as I haven't actually seen this film. This will have to do.

Robert Duvall is one of the all-time great actors. Period. And though one person described him as a character actor, he can easily handle the lead, as he did in Lonesome Dove, Tender Mercies (where he was a believable sex symbol), and The Apostle. (He was merely okay in Open Range, which is a mostly lame film. Bill Murray stole Get Low from him.)

He should have gotten Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Film for The Apostle. Perhaps he would have quit, and saved his fans the mostly disappointing films that followed. I suspect his problems stem from a desire in old age to be a cowboy. (I know the feeling.)
