No it wont. Millions use the site and completely ignore the message boards.
I for one am glad they're going. Too many basement dwelling trolls live on these boards and make it a nightmare for regular people genuinely curious about something in a film/tv show.
So to get rid of trolls, you forfeit the board entirely. That's some current year thinking alright. How about don't like it just avoid it? I guess that too 2007. Remember, its the current year.
shareSounds like backwards thinking to me. A few bad apples so take it all away. What do I know I grew up without participation trophies.
sharewe should just blow up the world then.
shareWow....i had no idea that IMDB was going to disable these boards. This is HUGELY disappointing. The boards offer a wonderful opportunity to share ideas, thoughts, questions, etc. Yes yes yes there's trolling but there's also a ton of positive movie loving dialogue. This is absolutely disappointing.
shareI've been an active user for over 10 years, I doubt I'll be coming here as often as I used to. I mostly used the forums to hear and listen to great ideas or to ask questions regarding movies I had just watched. This website doesn't really offer me anything of value any longer.
shareImdb should do away with the user ratings while they're at it then. Too many trolls rating movies a 1 or 10 just because they can. I know I will be taking my traffic elsewhere. Most of the time I visit imdb is after watching a film or tv show, to check out the message boards for that page to see what others thought about it. Anyone who's so weak-minded they can't simply ignore trolls probably shouldn't even be accessing the internet.
shareExactly how I feel. I often check the boards to see what people think of a show or an actor and it's often funny. I notice in the reason for closing down they take such a mummy tone about things not being constructive and other patronizing words. They're shutting it down because they don't approve of the comments and that is pathetic. If someone's abusive ban them. If they're not then ignore what you don't like. It really is just another example of growing censorship driven by disapproval.
share@mickylynch9 so you come on the board to troll me hmm makes sense
shareHow did i troll you? I gave my opinion as to why IMDB will not die.
I wasn't abusive or confrontational with you. Do you even know what a troll is?
dude wtf just because you disagree with his opinion doesn't automatically make him a troll stop being so sensitive
shareThe boards are what brings the site alive. Sure you get some trolls and flaming but there's plenty of brilliant insights you wont find anywhere else.
shareOh irony...nice troll ;)
shareI don't think any petition will work with the corporate suits that run this place. It's all about the money with them. Nothing else.
Alternatives? "The Movie Database (TMDb) welcomes abandoned IMDb users to discuss any movie or TV show in civil manner"

Just started exploring the site and I'm encouraged by it.
Thanks… I'll check it out.
shareThis only proves that it's too hard to look at ourselves in a mirror, and easier to ignore the problem rather than fix it. Let's face it .. these boards represent the direction our overall culture has taken during the past decade.
During the past decade, I've noticed more and more vulgar and free-wheeling insults, snotty attitudes, and care-free accusations spreading across these boards like weeds. And from what I've observed, this behavior only mirrors the path our society in general has taken in the same time frame.
So it really is hard to look in a mirror, isn't it? The easiest thing to do is to simply put the mirror in the closet. And that's what's happening here.
The harder choice is to fix the problem. Unfortunately that's going to require far greater effort than what can be achieved by the respecting and good members of the IMDB community, alone.
WORD!
shareI love Imdb for the message boards and all the information that it gives you. I'm so discouraged that it's going away. What I can't seem to realize though is if they want us to go to the social media aspect, why is that going to be any different than all the name calling, trolls and anything else that they don't like on the board? Still going to happen.
shareMaybe if the people who run this site would actually put forth effort to have real moderation on the boards, it would be a more "positive" experience and thin-skinned children wouldn't get their feelings hurt by trolls quite as often.
shareYou are right. But I wonder, could the main reason for closing the boards be that they want to move traffic onto their fb and other social media accounts instead, maybe there's more profit for them in doing that. Under all circumstances, a terribly bad decission, and I for one will not be joining them on social media.
shareYes I think social media is a contributing factor. Social media is a fad right now so I'm guessing they would rather put all of their stock in those aspects of the site instead of fixing the message boards' nonexistent moderation. And as a result, those of us who see social media as a temporary craze are getting the short end of the stick.
shareIts not the trolls (although it does seem that anyone with a contrarian opinion is now deemed to be one). That's just the spun rationale. Serious movie discussions quickly put them in their place and their impact dissipates very quickly. I would imagine the real reason is cost or should I say revenue. Amazon has plans for IMDB that likely involve better promotion, marketing and sale of movie product, that will only appear after the demise of the boards - popular ratings will be next to go. IMDB represents a significant underutilised asset and its boards serve a social/community purpose and not a commercial one. If trolls were the real objection why not introduce a nominal charge that would discourage the unworthy and improve the quality of discussion. No, there are bigger plans underway here.
In the hands of a commercial enterprise since 1998 I am surprised that it has lasted this long in its current form. The impact of consumer opinion is likely geting in the way of the marketing and image building of pre-releases and the studio's are likely turning up the heat. IMDB has no intention of replicating the capability thru other sm platforms - my guess is that it wants as far as possible to shutdown opinion besides FB and Twitter cannot replicate the central depository of title specific discussion in the way the boards do.
Advanced "sneak peaks" often have the movie present in IMDB but with no ability to rank it. The studio does not want opinions forming before the spin machine had done its work. I suspect that this is all part of the pressure on Amazon to manage the message from IMDB.
Its status is unique and credible and the board's are a fantastic source of "common man" opinion and a valuable contrast to the swarms of conflicted reviews. It performs the same role as "cellar tracker' does for wine - what does the average consumer think of this wine rather than the conflicted super noses. There is no mileage here at least in paying for or facilitating consumer opinion. The business of art will need to be discussed elsewhere. The discussion will migrate we just have to figure out where:-)
It will be a great loss.
SCREW IMDB FOR REMOVING THE MESSAGE BOARDS
shareIt seems simple - appoint power users as monitors and give them the power to delete offensive posts and disable accounts based on a published code of conduct. Plenty of other message boards do something similar
shareThanks to all of the trolls..... really going to miss this..oh well.
"I don't give a tuppenny fck about your moral conundrum, you meat headed sh*t sack."
They should've first tried to save the boards by having moderators act as pest control over accounts that are only here to bait and troll.
I don't know why they didn't try that a decade ago.
I am so happy these messayed boards are being deleted. I've all but stopped reading them because there has been sooooooo much hate, discourtesy, rudeness, and disrespect shown on these boards. I can't tell you how many times I've backed my way out of a thread because it had devloved into a disrespectful, rude, petty argument between two sorry souls. Think what a waste of time it has been for IMDB "administrators" to identify and delete inappropriate content. IMDB is telling members to use Facebook, Twitter, and other Web sources to discuss movies so the other Web site's "administrators" will burn up their resources trying to moderate the trash that anonymity gives idiots the courage to post. RIP IMDB message boards. I won't miss you.
