Regrettably, it treads very familiar ground.

It?s rather befuddling when something as progressive as a female-directed cable drama with a diverse cast can feel so familiar. After all, one of the most appealing artistic aspects of hearing from voices not belonging to the middle-aged white men dominating our entertainment culture is that we?ll be exposed to perspectives unfamiliar to our own.

I loved it.

TWD- The worst season finale ever. Never mind- Sleepy Hollow was worse.

I enjoyed it immensely! I like that slow purposeful direction. It reminds me of TREME. if it can be on that level for 4-5 seasons it is all good with me. The actors who play the siblings are superb. Ralph Angel is gorgeous!!! Lawd.

Agree on the direction & I see the potential to reach Tremé's level. Right now, I think it's a tad too flat and melodramatic.
Let's see if it's a soap opera or a character drama as soon as the siblings have settled on the farm and the show has found its main narrative there.

My take: it's the better version of 'This is us' at this point.

I feel the same way to a point. Mostly with the storylines of Charley and the lack there of when it comes to Nova. However, I feel with the way Black men are being handled emotionally, you can see the influence of the women who are in control of this show.

They have the usual network TV drama many crave, your usual muscle bound men, but rather than make them cold and heartless, they make them vulnerable and emotional. Especially when their kids are involved. Which, to me, is the main thing this show does different which makes it stand out from the rest.

Though, I have to admit, I find it weird how the women get the short end of the stick.

I agree and it makes me love this show. As a male, I am extremely in tune with the men on this show. This is a rarity.

Hey, I'm open to suggestions, but I'm really tired of unfunny black ghetto humor, people holding their crotches, speaking unintelligible dialect with every other word "mother f_cker". Get real.

I know you're a troll and you're starving, but I need a list of these shows. I bet you can't provide one.

Such a troll right. I came here to shed my frustrations with the show so far. I'm just hating the lack of definitive progress. I'm a flake sometimes but even I make faster moves than this show is right now. I want to like but GD I agree with the OP on this one

It does have a sort of "reheated" flavor, doesn't it?

I agree. The problem, however, is that they are trying to sell their product to the same people so they can't risk venturing too far from the usual.

"Unfamiliar" and "Different" don't sell anymore. Now it's all "it's this show meets that show" or "here comes the 5th sequel of that movie franchise that you watched 15 years ago" or "by the creators of", "Marvel this", "Disney that".

People find comfort in the familiar. And the rest of us who wants to hear the unheard voices are left to look for ourselves. Oh well.
