Why Am I Watching This Show?

I must be in the minority because I don't think the show is that great, but for some reason I keep coming back week after week.

First, I loath the soundtrack on this entire show. The opening credits music is bizarre and the abstract accompanying visual motif makes me want to turn away from the screen for those 30 seconds until it's over. The song selection of the show in general is very "7th-Heaven-ish", like it belongs on a mainstream soap opera rather than a southern, Louisianian based Black drama.

Ralph Angel is a hopeless *beep*-up that doesn't have any redeeming qualities other than his good looks, which isn't enough me to like his character. Side Note: Kofi Siriboe's attempt at a southern accent makes me cringe every time.

I love Nova. LOVE LOVE LOVE NOVA. Rutina Wesley is a goddess. I've loved her ever since watching her in True Blood. Her scenes with Greg Vaughan is the many reasons why I keep watching the show up until this point. I hope we haven't seen the last of Nova and Calvin.

The entire West family is a mess.

The only aspects of the show I'm rooting for are Nova, Blue and the Farm. I couldn't care less about everybody else.

So I've watched the most recent episode on 10/26 and I must say it was a superb episode. I found myself crying at the end when Darla poured her heart out. Bianca Lawson is a phenomenal actress. Overall, I think the show is OK.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes and I'm
sure there are plenty of shows I disliked that many have liked. Just wondering, what are some of your favorite shows/movies and what do yo like about them? What about your tastes in music? What kind of music do you like. Jazz? R&B?

It's obvious you have your reasons. I love the writing and the details...many black families have a lot of layers, like an onion. The music is one of my favorite parts...soundtrack is ALL of that! But I am also a fan of Mechell Ndegeocello's music. She scored the show.

And I am from Louisiana and we are vibrant, emotional, complicated people. Our ways are different than others. And that's ok. But it also says something that you keep tuning in. I only gave Tyler Perry two shows on OWN. I tried. I couldn't. But this? This is different. And so much better.

Also, I know plenty of men like Ralph Angel...never hopeless, but always trying. Are we
to give up on men like him? He has shown effort and he has shown love, especially for Blue. No man is perfect. Men like Ralph Angel, those who are trying, need our support. I don't know any family that is perfect. You don't know what grief and death will do to a family that's not especially close to begin with. Trust me, I know.

because there's something real in it, that you identify with. Something is connecting with you beyond the usual surface stuff, and knee-jerk reactions all shows display. For me, it's letting me draw my own feelings, instead of telling me how to feel.

I can't stand Charlie she's a s*** little one. She's conceit and think she better than everyone else. She doesn't work and other than her husband's basketball money nothing to contribute to the family. She's a superficial written character so far until they gave her a better storyline.

I'm still watching episode 8 and have liked Charley for the most part (even empathized with her situation) until now. Why does she choose to NEVER listen to anyone until it's almost too late?

I understand that you managed your husband's career which probably makes you feel very empowered, but strong women also know when they are in over their heads. She is surrounded by experienced farmers telling her what they know best, but she has to constantly do what she wants to anyways..ugghhh...Stubborn for no reason!!!

She is really starting to annoy me. Including how she is treating Nova (even though Nova is not innocent herself)

If you watched the show, you might like it. Charly has a a job, she's a sports manager. Davis isn't her sole client either.

The music's amazing and, if you pay attention, reflects each character (even the farm) just as his or her wardrobe does.

And, Black people listen to all kinds of music because all music comes from us. Southern Black people don't just listen to Blues and Southern rap.

I'll admit the story's gotten lamer as the show's gone on. Charlie's always been annoying and inauthentic, though she is spot on about Nova. Nova gives the weakest, most wack apologies ever. Ralph Angel is meh. But, D'ondre Whitfield is the most authentic of them all. That's surprising to me because watching Roooobert walk around in a cowboy hat and boots seemed terrible casting at first.

Ralph A. voice is very annoying, not sure if it's his attempt to sound southern or just his voice. I like the show but it's starting to get a rather soap opera-ish. I don't find myself in a hurry to watch when comes on is a big indicator that it's losing it's luster.

Same here, OP. I asked myself the same question and the answer is Rutina Wesley. Her character is not used very much though. They focus so much more on Charley and Ralph Angel. Probably because her only love interest is a married white guy, whereas Charley has the whole multiple black muscle men in her line of sight and Ralph Angel is... well... a muscle black man.

They really do know who they are selling to.
