I found the pilot awful - should I give the show a chance?

I disliked the casting. I can't understand how the son is unable to recognise his father when he was younger: I'm 46 and I can remember how my mom and dad looked when they were 35, and we have tons of pics from the 70s and 80s.
If someone looking like my mom at 35 was going to show up after her funeral at a soccer game, I would tell her 'go seat with the parents'. I would be so shocked that I would immediately ask her if we're related in some way.
I don't know, the whole pilot was cheap and badly written.

It's covered in the next couple episodes that he doesn't look exactly like he did when he was 35. They made him "the best version" of him they could come up with when they put him in the tank and altered his DNA slowly over several months time.

As already explained by the other poster responding, they did. You just didn't have the patience to get to that part.
