It was originally a term to describe Scottish rebels who were seeking independence from England. Is it possible you're mistaking a Brooklyn accent for a Scottish one?
I don't know how the term originated - but the term now most definitely refers to southern white males who like NASCAR, hunt, wear a lot of CAMO, chew tobacco, etc. See Jeff Foxworthy and his comedy.
Johnny had a Brooklyn accent, cause the actor who played him is from NY. The dude was most definitely NOT A "REDNECK."
Nor was he a "hill billy" LOL.
He was a city boy hustler through and through...
White trash, yeah, but not a redneck, not a hill-billy (as the cop described him).
yes it 100% does. the term "redneck" is used exclusively in the USA, and for at least the past half century, it's used as a term to describe White, southern, rural males. The typical stereotype of a redneck is NASCAR-loving, hunting, beer-drinking buffoon.
In no way is a con artist, scammer, ring-wearing, brooklyn-accent having, pimp California city-boy A REDNECK!
Johnny is exactly what Frank called him - a CRETIN.
Well I am a working class rural southern male, and I say he's a redneck. I've heard Irish people refer to people as rednecks. Heard Canadians use the term. The word is in common use in the entire English speaking world.
