They tried this Criminal Minds spin off once before. We do remember how bad that was don't we?
This is the weird part. The backdoor pilot for Suspect Behavior was a good Criminal Minds (standalone) episode, but the premise was bonkers. Like, what the *beep* was the point of it? Same show, with different characters, but they are all "eeeedgy" because they dress in leather and work in a dilapidated gym or some *beep* And don't even consider the actual team members. They tried to be so "cool", the were ridiculous. It was a pointless spin-off done at the order of the station, not because they had any idea for a spin-off, and it was painfully evident.
But this is the opposite. Here, the backdoor episode was terrible, because Erica Messer can't write Criminal Minds. However, the show's premise is probably the only premise of a Criminal Minds spinoff that can possibly work. I've read on crimes and particularly serial killers around the world, and it is fascinating to see how they differ, and law enforcement reacts differently to them, purely because they grew up in a different culture. Things like how a criminal wouldn't even become one if he had been born in another country/culture, or how one remains active for years in one country when in the country next door he would be caught in a couple of weeks. That's fascinating stuff.
If the show plays that card right, it has a chance to become a good show. It's too bad that Messer is the show runner, because she isn't very bright, and they seem to cling too tightly to her retarded vision of the world (i.e. all foreigners are criminals wanting to prey on Americans unless the contrary is proven, but don't worry, there is always a gun-toting hero played by Sinise to save you because your passport won't! Crazy, owning an American passport doesn't make you immune to everything!!!).
