That's just it. A lot of the 'modern' sayings that we take for granted today do have their roots that go that far back. So it is plausible.

The team appears to be prepping for D Day in 1944 (unless there were similar pre-D Day plans that were pushed back until they became D day...)
whether they had adopted such euphemisms already...they no doubt had period accurate versions that would sound 'hokey' by modern standards... not unlike HBO's Deadwood using modern Profanity because real western swearing wouldn't have the same effect on the audience
They're building up to the Dieppe raid in 1942, and actually filmed there.
