Would John actually be upset at Christmas?

In the film, John is upset when his dad gets him a thoughtless gift. Would this actually happen?

If John is a sociopath it means he has emotions, yes, but they only relate to him. It makes sense to me if he got something he didn't want and would be upset, however, what upsets him is that his dad wasn't THINKING about him. What upsets him is that he felt his dad didn't CARE about him.

Would this matter to John? A sociopath is, by definition, not able to feel empathy. Therefore, would it really upset him if his dad didn't actually care about him? In order to care, wouldn't he have to want the love of another person? Would he ever actually want that?

Legitimate question, hope someone can clear it up

I know nothing of the content in the literature but I, too, thought the same thing when it came to the Christmas scene.

John just struck me as the type who wouldn't care much if he received a bad gift from his father.

Granted, definition of sociopath aside, we do not get to see the type of relationship he had with his father AND the letter to John on the gift (a blatant lie) makes the scenario all the more puzzling.

If he and his dad were so close and John got upset, FINE, I can understand. However, if he and his dad were that close, than would his dad tell this huge foolish, grandiose lie about old times in the letter? I mean, that's a dick move.

Sure, you can still want to feel loved from a parent even if their horrible, however, it didn't seem to fit with John's persona.

i thought the point was that John was just infatuated with serial killers and/or sociopathic behavior and was acting. this isn't the only thing he did in the movie suggesting he wasn't a rigid sociopath.
