The Wannabe Girlfriend

What was the point of the girl from school that kept trying to talk to him? She kept popping up but it seemed to be for no real reason. Does she play a more important part in the book? Good (different) movie though!

I think it was just to show how detached he was.

I think it was about deconstructing the stereotype. In a typical monster movie the guy and girl join forces to fight the monster and the experience builds an emotional connection between them. But he's not typical so he blows her off rather than bring her in on the fight. Instead it is his mother who ends up joining the fight and getting (a little bit) closer to him.

Same thing happened with his friend who would normally become a sidekick in the fight against evil but just kicked him out into the cold when he was most needed.

Plus the shrink thing and his inability to show empathy, her role was nothing more than a way to show how much the main character was a loner/awkward.

The movie is based on the first book in a series, I haven't read them personally but apparently the girl plays a bigger role in the second story. I think they are just trying to be loyal to the books and maybe putting her in with a second movie in mind.

^ She does. And you're pretty much on target with your theory. :)

Great books, BTW.

you are right, in the book she does a bit more than on the movie. Of course, the movie has a lot fewer scenes, but all in all, she is pretty much secondary until the second book. If you want, you can read the books and see, I don't want to spoil anything.

I'm pretty sure him and Rob were lovers

reply

Yeah she was there to show that he was walking blinkered through life.

He never gave this girl a second thought, yet she clearly adored him. He simply couldn't see it.

reply

Poor dude. He was missing out. But I sure fail to see what interest she had in him.

reply

He's a cute boy, for starters.

And if you didn't know about the whole diagnosed-as-a-sociopath thing, from the outside he probably seems like this shy boy who is really studious. If the kid who is the bully shows her a lot of attention, she might be driven toward someone whose personality seems less dominant. If she feels bad for him because he is bullied, some of that pity might get mixed up in her head as attraction or affection. She might not understand that he's not interested in her, and thinks she needs to be more obvious in her attentions.

Someone in another thread said that in the books he stays away from her because she actually triggers some of his murderous thoughts. Even though that isn't made clear in the movie, it might inform the character. As a pretty girl she might be intrigued by a boy not being into her at all, despite her flirting.

Yeah true, he actually stalked her in the book and constantly tried to suppress the urge to stab a knife into her chest.
