Charlize Theron Didn't Fit

I really enjoyed this film, but one thing that just didn't really work for me was Charlize Theron as Monkey. I can't quite put my finger on it, but her voice just didn't suit the appearance of the monkey. I think it also has to do with the character of Monkey in general. I thought the writing was really forced trying to make Monkey have a lot of funny moments when it didn't call for it.

I'm not denying Theron's talent, I just didn't think the combination worked very well in this film.

Anyone else feel this way? The rest of the voice-cast fit flawlessly.

I agree with this, Charlize Theron really stuck out and seemed the most out of place. A shame too, considering what an important character Monkey is.

I don't think she fit very well, although to be honest I don't think that character was written very well so maybe that's the problem. Way too much cheap humor forced into, of all places, a film about mourning the loss of loved ones.

MM wasn't bad but it seemed like another instance of shoving big name actors into an animated film even though you can't see their faces and meanwhile actual voice artists are out of work.

I don't think she has an especially well-known or recognisable voice, so you have a point.

I'm sure they could have found a voice actor who would have added more colour and personality to the part. Er, if they wanted to, that is.

I thought she fit way more than McConaughey. He's supposed to voice a Japanese Samurai and he still has a freakin southern accent.

I think you all miss the point of her character. This is not a Dreamworks' or Disney's movie. Monkey was not supposed to be funny, that's what Beetle was for. They just wanted to add funny elements just like the old woman told Kubo that people loved to laugh at funny parts. Beetle was funny that's why he melt Monkey's cold heart in the first place when they were in human form.
Kubo's mother used all of her magic left to turn into Monkey so that she could protect her son. When it comes to protecting their children, i think all moms will be super serious.
Theron could easily do funny voice, but i think this is what they asked her for because it stayed true to the character.

Totally agree. Her voice was the one thing which let the film down, imo. Just a bad match.

I thought it fit perfectly. It was the voice of Kubo's mother, very motherly... not a monkey character.
