Just wondering:
Has a situation like this ever happened before? In the sense that a team making a documentary on a crime/event uncovered new, striking evidence, that led to the re-opening of a case or the capture of a criminal. Just looking for similar scenarios, or was "The Jinx" really something spectacularly unique?

I'd suggest the Paradise Lost series about the West Memphis 3, and Staircase.

shareWell one somewhat parallel case is that of Karen Duenas.
A large part of the conviction in that case was based on how you interpret the words of 2 recordings: one being a 9-1-1 with some dubious transcription, and the other being how you interpret some stammering by the accused during a police interview.
The prosecution alleges the audio recordings are admissions by the killer. The defense has quite different transcription and interpretation.
But the parallel is that the recorded words of the suspect person factor huge in the eventual verdict.
Paradise Lost eventually led to the release of the West Memphis Three.

Not exactly the same thing, but "Serial" has led to more court proceedings, at least.
