It says something about a TV show for it to be “spoiled” for some by a New York Times news alert. Though that only speaks to one side of The Jinx‘s ability, the journalistic relevance. Director Andrew Jarecki and his team thoroughly researched each angle of the life of Robert Durst, member of a wealthy New York business empire and alleged murderer. The compilation of documents, photos and assortment of talking heads would be fascinating if compiled in any light. Luckily, Jarecki gives way to more artistic flairs, with Thin Blue Line-esque moody recreations and emotional tangents with various friends of potential victims. There’s a human element underneath the shock value, which stops the indulgences into Durst’s persona from feeling schlocky. And his humanity is important to define, as the series does early on, because it brings the entirety of the story to a realistic playing field. That is, until the final, terrifying minutes full of burps and hushed confessions. In those moments, The Jinx transcends both art and journalism to become something rare and undefinable: a horror film, captured via audio, starring a man who at first glance looks to be just another man. And yet he isn’t, of course.
