I enjoyed the film mostly. The swapping of gender-roles in a convincing way (authoritive women impregnating males by surgery) was interesting.
The film had a whole lot of hints that made it possible to imagine a background to everything that was happening. Ten years old Nicholas makes drawings of a car, a ferris wheel, a horse, a curly haired woman... Considering these things aren't to be found on the Island he must have been kidnapped at some point in time. Also,he must have come from a very normal place, considering the normal things he draws. So what's up here? Where does this information lead? I was disappointed when the film ended and nothing was explained,apart from the fact that there seemed to be a normal world outside the weird island, and Nicholas got to return there.

You clicked on a thread that obviously was to discuss a plot point of the movie and you are complaining about spoilers? First impression/brainstorm after one viewing - just writing down initial thoughts

It's all show don't tell for this one and you can only speculate as to what "was before". But it seems as if the boys were all kidnapped from the world we see in the final shot. Also it seems that mutation had taken place with some(?) of the women as we see in the film shown to the nurses and that they now are trying to start an alternative civilization.

In this world procreation takes place without sex and love hence the many shots and allusions to the starfish which is one of natures creations that can reproduce without sex. We see it in the boys eyes and other places as if the boys are gradually mutating towards this trait - with the help of medication and surgery.

Thematically it probably plays around with current themes like environmental damage to humanity leading to mutation and males as the weaker sex and the "old trusty" power of love. Love - apparently there's still hope and the boy can not be kept down and remains resistant, curious and as he says "he is not sick". The drugs that they are administered probably is a potent mix of hormonal treatment and memory- and emotion blockers because it all seems rather inhuman and cold.

But they don't work and he still has passion within him. He remembers and longs for the old world and more importantly he longs for human interaction. He is constantly wearing red, drawing a woman with red hair - red is the color of "passionate love, seduction, violence, danger, anger, and adventure" i.e. human traits. It also still resides within the nurse who, as it turns out, is a red haired woman albeit without genitals. She feels sorry for him and first tries to mercy kill him but can't go through with it in (seems to allude strongly to the little mermaid by H.C Andersen) and then sets him free instead.

.. to a world that, from a distance, appears to be what we're all used to. He wasn't just being "freed", he was being returned.

The world in which the movie is set, is it an island? The village everybody lives in is stark, grimy, dingy and spare - I don't remember seeing anything in the way of knick-knacks (or tables and shelves to put them on), or unnecessary furniture. With those funny pads running down their backs, I interpreted the women as being not entirely human, implying that this island may be some kind of colonisation effort, but I won't try any guesses at who's doing the colonising. Point is, the boys are in a kind of prison.

The women, by the way, had "genitals". A man tends to notice such things. What also strikes me as very curious is that there are no men - not even "very young" men - and no girls.

I'm so tired of this kind of thing. Discussion boards are exactly for that. To DISCUSS the damn movie that is presented. If you have not watched the movie don't go looking to discuss it. Why even discuss it if you haven't seen it?? If you want information on it go somewhere else. Not a discussion board. Ignorance at its best.

It's more stupid to create a thread with a missleading title and, boom, big spoiler.
I take a look to discussion board also to know news about a movie or read early reviews, a word like spoiler is not so hard to be typed and put that is purely a matter of common sense and respect, especially in small productions like this.
It's not ignorance at his best... just laziness.

This is one film where it is not spoiled by knowing anything about it. In fact, had I had some of the insights here before I saw it then I may have enjoyed it more as to me it was just confusing. But I also agree with the point that these forums are a place to discuss the film after you have seen it - go to the reviews if you do not want spoilers.

YOU chose to come to the discussion board before seeing the movie. Spoiler tags shouldn't even exist and they didn't until the whining started from people that don't know what to avoid before seeing a film. No sympathy, in fact, kinda glad the movie was "ruined" for you. Maybe you learned something today.

Also the name of the red haired nurse: "Stella" - means star. I think this was another final hint at this starfish relation, too. :)

I love your point about the seahorses actually! I wonder how the movie would've turned out as more seahorse themed. ;)
