Lovecraft?

Has to be inspired by.

My thoughts as well.

Yes, there are some (distant) references.

reply

Yes indeed!

Maybe, but I think these days its became such a widely used term that anything relating to the unknown, or any creature-related or body-horror/alien films is described as Lovecraftian.

Sure, his works inspired millions and rightly so, but unless there is some weird Old Ancients angle I totally missed in Evolution I don't see it here apart from maybe in spirit.

I mean *eye roll* you know Lovecraft wrote more than just the Cthulhu mythos right? "The Hound", "Reanimator" and severeal other stories had nothing to do with the "Old Gods" mythos.

A lot of his work did involve supernatural/abstract science and often a huge theme revolves around entities using the human body for some nefarious or horrifying means. Usually this was associated with creatures of the deep.

*Spoilers*

Like the island of "Dagon", (although that story does fall into the Cthulhu realm) was just a mysterious evil place full of underwater beings that human eyes have never, should never see. That's what this movie reminded me of simply because the obvious question of the "women" that are in charge of this "place."

The imagery and color definitely reminded me of Dagon which I liked well enough. This, I didn't like.
