what the *beep* happened to late night talk shows

between corden and fallon, the sycophancy and grovelling is unbearable

letterman, kilborn, ferguson, and conan (for the majority of his time) had a certain edge to them - they were subversive and interesting, and actually engaged with the guests, as opposed to kissing their asses, singing songs and playing games with them

i don't understand how these two guys enjoy any measure of popularity or success, they're so painfully bland and safe

is this just a by-product of today's over-sensitive, PC world? you know, where making fun of anyone but the straight white man is a hate crime, and where hurt feelings are a national tragedy?

i mean *beep* letterman used to make headlines with some of his interviews. can you see either of these geezers ever doing anything as remotely interesting?

reply

To be fair, and whether you like it or not, Corden makes headlines every time he does Carpool Karaoke...he's racked up hundreds of millions of YouTube views.

reply

Yeah, thats what happening, i mean the PC its a bitch, but the Letterman and Fergunson "rock n roll" aproach, was kinda over already, its like most stand-ups, predictable, more of the same, so its nice to try other places. But i agree that Corden lacks some edge, but i love the format, they take what i like best on The Graham Norton Show, all the guests together, i love it, all talk shows should be like that, and Reggie its good too, he got some cool witers, with fresh ideias, willing to try and experiment, and thats important in tv. Maybe i do't know, im from Brazil, so im just watching from the outside, but i watch all the talk shows everyday, and Corden its the one that i don't fast forward that much, but as i said, the show its really lame some times.

reply

I love Graham Norton! Especially The Big Red Chair. ;-)

reply

Yes me too, they tried the concept on a brazilian show a few years, too bad didn't stick. And the guest also seem to enjoy that bit.

Nope, the saccharine, bland late night era is the last gasp of a dying genre.

As long as studios make movies, these shows will exist as a showcase...

You're right about that.

I don't really watch Late Night tv shows anymore. I miss Jay Leno i used to watch his show every night. I love Jay Monologues and his comedy bits.

I miss the days of a good monologue and good comedy bits and good interviews. I don't care for the music bits and Jimmy Fallon game show segments.

Jimmy Fallon happened. Before Fallon, late night talk shows were about first and foremost being funny and yes, having an edge, which you could only see on tv every night a late night show. But then Fallon came along with his lip-sync battles and other *beep* and made late night tv more about entertaining teenage girls (which some have cleverly called "Prom King Comedy"). Fallon also brought along his safe, politically correct jokes which don't offend anybody (except people who want to watch something funny). And because Fallon became such a success, CBS looked to get themselves their own Fallon who was also safe, PC, and entertaining to teenage girls, and that's where Corden came in. And yes, their ass-kissing is so unbearable and phony.

I think Fallon and Corden are partially a by-product of an over-sensitive, PC world and also just a trend, and hopefully people will soon get sick of this trend and will be inspired to again watch someone who has an edge and is more focused on being funny than sparring a celebrity's feelings. But don't expect to see that person on late night network tv anytime soon.

I have to say that that late night TV is still pretty good, with the exception of Corden. Why CBS hired him, I don't know. The show is shockingly dire and would only appeal to PC minded Brits. THe humor in both countries are worlds apart. British TV used to be good, but since Britain became chavy, entertainment only appeals to chavs (low class British people).

reply

There are no more late night talk shows. Just talk shows that try to engineer viral videos to trend on social media, that also happen to air at night on network television.
