Why did the San Bernardino original shop fail?

The story is probably a sad commentary on the public's ability to discern quality. I would certainly prefer to have my milkshake contain actual ice cream rather than some artificial mix.
The type of milkshake powder mix depicted in the movie wasn't actually created for McDonald's until about 1971. So the competing McDonald's at that time would still have been serving ice cream milk shakes.
And you don't just add the powder to water and have it instantly turn into a thick milkshake like they showed in the movie, either. It's mixed in a machine at very cold temperature. And in recent years, they have removed artificial flavors as well as high fructose corn syrup from the shake mix.
