Why couldn't they leave?

I can't remember his name, but the dude that was saying he wanted to leave and later realized he couldn't leave never really had his reasoning explained. I'm not sure if I missed something, but they had a scene where they were sitting in some grass in a field and he was saying he guessed he couldn't leave. I really want to know why that was.

I must have missed something also.

From the writer/director on Reddit:

As the film is now that are clues in the dialogue to the financial situation of Hell House. But the original script had much more back story that we eventually had to cut out. So what is left are the clues, they had to leave NY, go to a small town, had to sleep in their haunt which they never had to do before, Alex didn't want to spend money on automated props... things that give you the impression that Hell House is lacking money but the employees themselves don't really know the extent of it. Mac and Alex know though. So when Tony storms off and Mac chases after him he lets Tony in on the real reason they're out in Abaddon in the first place - Alex lost all their operating capital. If they don't pull this off then Hell House is done for good. That gets Tony to reconsider.

Alex had said earlier in the film "he just wanted to keep Hell House fresh, change things up a bit", but in reality they were forced out of NYC because of things Alex did behind the scenes to lose money. Only Mac knew this.

The original script had scenes that specifically answer these questions and tie Alex's actions to lose money and the Hotel itself, almost like luring Alex into a series of decisions that would lead the group to the hotel. This was all cut when we went the route of documentary mostly because we thought it was wrapping things up in to neat a package and its best to leave some answers vague or up to interpretation if you catch the key pieces of dialogue.

Wow! That's interesting. When I watched it again recently I noticed things weren't always pleasant between Alex and Mac. In fact there is a scene at the beginning of the film where they get out of the car and are shown a distance away from the car and are clearly arguing. I was wondering what that was all about. I guess this sort of answers that question.

Thank you for this.

Really? that's it? That's so lame. I assumed it had something to do with Sarah having some sort of link to the house, which would make sense given the way things worked out. But this explanation blows.

I assumed that (because of financial insolvency and his latent Satanism) Alex set the whole thing up in order sacrifice as many people as he could to Satan in order to aquire whatever folks aquire when they sell their soul to the Prince of Darkness.
Demons can't enter unless you invite them in so you know those cloaked spectres were SUMMONED by Alex....ALEX!!! He only addressed the palpaple,all-consuming terror when cornered and his only apparent concern was to keep everyone calm long enough to get them into their sacrificial gear and chained to the walls.
I think I over thought it.

I think Alex knew the entire time that this particular site, of ALL places to choose from in the USA, was the Seven-Harrowing-Hells version of the State Fair.
He was broke to the point of a pact with the devil, figured out the BnB was the ultimate vortex to Hell, knew what he had to do, and went full speed ahead with his worship.
