I didn't get the part with the girl, was she dead or not? at one point it seems she wakes up in the basement, goes back up and is killed by paul, then paul kills himself (he was possessed I guess?). what was up with that? did this happen 5 years ago or just now? she was alive for 5 years in the basement until paul (who was still roaming around?) finally killed her? what?

Really enjoyed the movie but I think this whole part could have been cut off.

I think the girl you're referring to is Sara.
She was killed by Paul the night Hell House opened (in the past).
We see this after Diane has finished interviewing Sara in the present and has left to go to the Hotel.
Her crew member that watches the footage of Sara being killed tries to warn Diane not to go into the house but she ignores the call.
