I really liked the film. I thought it was interesting, atmospherically delicious, and it had some creepy, interesting ideas floating throughout. Plus, I felt like it was smart enough to never spoon-feed me anything. The pace breezed by for me, although I do know what you mean about how it could be difficult to understand them. I didn't need subtitles too often, but maybe that's just me.
As to your main gripe, it's a bit of a curious one. I never saw a trailer, so I don't know how it was marketed, but the film was called The Witch and showed some strange imagery early on. There's definitely an unsettling atmosphere throughout, one that hints to the supernatural and the otherworldly. In short: I'm not sure why your expectations were calibrated the way they were. Moreover, it seems odd to me to complain that a movie wasn't something you wanted it to be and fault the film for it. Sure, maybe you don't like this kind of thing, but is it a bad movie for that? Your expectations were different than what the filmmakers made. I've had that happen before and re-watched the film in question, quite enjoying it once I took it for what it was, not what I expected the first time.
