This Would Have Been A Better Movie If...

...they didnt show a witch at all.

If they had made it like the Blair Witch Project, it would have been more ambiguous and it all could have been just Thomasina's delusion. It would have been a stronger movie. As it stands, its just a by the numbers horror movie with a creepy atmosphere and little else.

I don't agree with that; I loved that they gave us a witch. How many movies have you seen where things turn out not to be what they seem? That has been done so often and is boring as hell. I really liked that *SPOILER** there really was a witch who brought evil upon a family, and that the devil got involved. It felt like a nice change from the normal aka boring normal of contemporary horror.

Remember Mama? That movie was completely fine up until we saw the Mama (in excesses galore). Then it got silly. The Witch learned well-- This witch wasn't overdone, what little we saw of her/them, was very brief and shot from a distance away, never allowing a sure confirmation of what exactly was happening... But her presence nonetheless was felt extremely strong!

I think The Witch was a very very good movie that stands out because of its splendid control of showing us witches and devilry and not turning it into a wheel of cheese.

I think it could have been a bit better if it had a tighter feel, there were a few scenes and shots that dragged and should have been edited to be shorter. Ain't nothin wrong with an 80 minute runtime...

I agree with you that The Witch has learned well from Mama to keep the witches presence subtle and strong.

Yeah, but showing the monster has been done even more times than that and its become a cliche. I would have preferred the witch not to be shown, that way you wouldnt have been sure.

The movie would've been fine with only Black Phillip. Just the idea of Satan himself living on a farm in the form of an animal is creepy enough. But I didn't mind the witch so much either. Either way is fine.

To each his own of course. But I personally hate when these movies turn into a psychological thriller (was it all in their head all along? Was the protagonist the killer?). I was pleased when the witch was shown very early in the movie to be real. They kept it subtle and powerful, with no full on shots of the witch. It was "less is more" while still making it clear the witch was there. Plus if they never showed a witch, we would have missed some of the most disturbing scenes in the movie (baby scene, witches Sabbath, witch eating barn animal).

I disagree. Yes,they didn't have to show the witch. But, it made the conclusion more effective and gave the entire film a sense of dread from the get go.

I disagree. I think it could have used more witches, naked witches, and witch titties.

The funny thing is that even though they did show the witch several times.....People will still suggest that there was no witch lol.

I think the reason the directer descided to show us the witch within the first 10 minutes of the film, was so that the audience knew right away that the film is not a psychological thriller.....There IS a witch.

But still.....LOL. "There was no witch, it was all in their heads!"

People just can't help themselves.
I were the directer I would be laughing at how pretentious people can be.
