Castro wanted it to end. That's why he left the door unlocked.

Why would he be so diligent always locking everything and then one day he doesn't? The night before they show Michelle talking to Castro about giving himself up.
I believe he thought he could not keep this up anymore, mainly because Jocelyn needed to be free.
Any thoughts on why all of a sudden after all those years, he left the door open?

reply

He got careless and forgot; plain and simple. No way he got a conscience.

The girls had other opportunities to escape through the years and didn't take them. He probably figured he had scared them enough into not attempting to escape and he got careless and forgot to lock the front door. Amanda said that while Castro had been telling her a lot that "this will be over soon" prior to the escape, she didn't think he was ready to give up and really let them go yet. Its just that as Jocelyn got older he began to let his guard down more and more. First he unchained them then eventually he stopped locking Amanda's door because the little girl would complain about being locked up in a small room all day.

My guess is that he had forgotten a number of times throughout the years, but this was the first time someone noticed AND had word that he had driven off.

reply

If he wanted to get caught, he wouldn't have lied to the police about how the girls went along with him willingly and they were just one big happy family. Psycho!

reply

He left the door open purposely. He wanted it to end! He couldn't keep his double life up anymore.
If you read Amanda's book, she said he kept telling them they would be free soon.

reply

I don't think he left the door open on purpose, otherwise he wouldn't have stopped at the local McDonald's on the street. He would have kept on ddiving sto get away.

reply

I think he was just careless and forgot. If he wanted it to end he wouldn't have stopped for something to eat. Am glad Charles and that other neighbor to action and freed Amanda when they did.

reply

Why would he suddenly forget not to lock up after 10 years, after being so diligent about always locking up? He knew he could not keep the child locked up anymore.

reply

Who knows. Am reading Michelle's book and he was beyond nuts. There is no way he wanted this to end. He just let his guard down for a minute and got careless.

He lost his job and his house was going to go into foreclosure...so it was only a matter of time before his house would be undergoing a thorough examination through whatever process foreclosures go through. So I think to him, the writing was on the wall. My theory.
