I don't read the comics so....
Are the defenders like a lesser superhero version of the Avengers?

shareThe Defenders roster changes frequently with some core that stays the same (AKA Luke Cage, Iron Fist) but they are frequently made up of random Avengers, X-Men, West Coast Avengers and members of the Fantastic Four...so it's more like they're auxiliary Avengers than "lesser" ones.
shareYou're thinking of Heroes for Hire, in which Luke Cage (Power Man) and Iron Fist are constant members (or associates of when Misty Knight took over).
The Defenders core members that generally stay are Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and the Incredible Hulk. For a long period (when the Comic was title the New Defenders), the noted members of the Defenders included Valkyrie, Hellcat (aka Patsy Walker from Jessica Jones), Moondragon (Daughter of Drax the Destroyer from Guardians of the Galaxy, Gargoyle, Son of Satan, among others.
Power Man was a core member of the Ultimates Defenders which included Hellcat, Nighthawk, Valkyrie, Black Knight, Son of Satan and Whiz-Kid.
lol a team with 2 superheroes that can talk to fish.. aquatic powers will surely come in handy in.. downtown New York?!
Comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable
The comic Defenders, which this doesn't really resemble except in name, were kinda a random assortment of heroes. I think at one time their lineup consisted of Doc Strange, the Hulk, the Silver Surfer, and a few others. Which actually made that particular team a GREATER version than most Avengers lineups that have existed.
