One of the best police procedurals I've seen

This series is beautifully written, beautifully acted, beautifully directed, and beautifully shot. And, as others have mentioned, it has a wonderful cast.

It is surely one of the best police procedurals I've ever seen. The storytelling is beautifully done — and all without a lot of gratuitously graphic violence. Most of all, however, the story has a caring heart at its center, without being maudlin. That's what sets it apart, I think.

It was especially enjoyable to watch Sir Tom Courtenay's performance. Brilliant!

I agree!
I was pleased that there were almost no flashback scenes, even though the crime occured 39 years earlier. A lot of shows love to indulge in elaborate 'back in time' sequences. This show was strong enough not to need such a common device.

I agree; it was top quality. The murder was almost a McGuffin as it served to expose the various long held secrets that the series was really about. I say 'almost a McGuffin' as the final reveal was worth waiting for and surprisingly tragic... there was no satisfaction from seeing what happened to the killer; it was more tragic than anything.

I agree. Terrific storytelling, superbly acted. Surely a BAFTA nomination is in the air for Courtenay after last night's amazing scene at the police station. The only couple of niggles I have is that I didn't buy the Cross character killing himself and I wish they'd cast someone older than Frances Tomelty as she looks too young to pass for someone in her 70's.

Brilliantly done, and with none of the usual cliches either:

No brilliant but mentally disturbed cop.
No chief of police interfering and trying to get the lead detective fired.
No sexual relationship between the two lead detectives.
No corruption in the force.
No backbiting underling looking to shaft their colleagues or boss.
No blaming anyone else for slow progress (you've got another 24 hours or else...).

Just excellent writing, perfectly paced plotting and superb acting.

I want more series like this.

Copy that.

I agree! I feel like I am learning how police investigations are conducted. When Cassie has her meetings and they assign all the investigative tasks, it puts the puzzle pieces into perspective.

Tom Courtenay - standing ovation performance! I have to go back and see every film, tv show he’s ever done.
