I just saw this film yesterday. It was riveting. I'm so glad that they used relatively unknown, unAmerican stars, which would have taken away from the story. I knew of Jamie Dornan (but never saw anything he's been in, including Shades of Grey), and heard of the other lead, though never saw any of his films either.
Does Jamie die in this movie? I was wondering because I know the person he's playing died while he was in action. If so how does it play out in the movie?
I know it left me reeling! I almost had a panic attack watching the scene right before the assassination when they were getting ready in the square. So well done and intense atmosphere. My heart was beating so fast. It was so intense and left the audience speechless for a couple minutes!
If anything it was almost too intense. I can't believe critics were calling it pedestrian and wooden. My sister and I are pretty tough critics and almost didn't go, but we both thought it was riveting!
"Riveting" is exactly how I'd describe it. Had me hooked from the get go. I had read about the story before, although not extensively, so I knew more or less what was going to happen. Was pleasantly surprised how accurate it was, for the most part. The actual assassination attempt played out pretty much exactly how I read it. Exceptionally well made scene, the moment the gun jams was heart-stopping.
Really, the whole movie was well done. Acting was excellent throughout, especially Murphy. Was worried that they would shoehorn in an awkward romance subplot, but I'm relieved at how minor it was. My only real complaint was that seeing the girl in the crypt at the very end was a tad over the top Hollywood-ish and a little cliché, but certainly not enough to ruin the film.
Pretty outstanding movie, shame it's only getting a limited release here in the States.
The bit you mention at the end didn't bother me as it was entirely in keeping with what dying people often see at the end of their life. It's not a Hollywood cliche but a frequency occurrence.
Yeah, that is true... I mean, it's about as minor a complaint as I can come up with heh. But I have heard some evidence to support that stuff like that can happen, thank you for reminding me. It does actually work pretty well with his guilt when he found out she died.
I found the film gripping. It's almost claustrophobic in its concentration on the minutia of an assassination. Cillian Murphy's performance sucked me right in.
It's the only thing that mitigates the horror - not just the faith of the priest but the growing body of evidence that "the other side" exists and that we only die to this world.
I hadn't really thought about that. I didn't really pick up much of a religious theme through the movie, other than the ending, but that does tie in with Dornan's character bringing up not knowing what would happen after the actual assassination. Definitely warming up to that scene at the end now ha.

I agree. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest and thought it might pop right out during that scene. This movie was superb.

Peggy it was kind of an interesting balance of showing the evils of the third reich while also showing the powerful good forces that existed in the resistance in Czech/Eastern Europe with some aid from the west. I mean there was one very grim scene of torture near the end, which I believe was meant to stand as a reminder of the gross brutality of the third reich. I think the shoot out in the church was a bit over the top but was sort of retribution for us all as the NAZI's failed so much in that scene (though maybe not quite such a fail in real life) because seeing NAZI's get killed on film serves as justice years after the fact, somehow.
The film was much more about the caustrophobic atmosphere that it was to be a part of the Czech resistence. They mentioned the destruction of the Czech village after the attack but did not show it.
The film was more about moving forward against evil and never giving up, about never turning your allies and compatriots in, dying for your cause and for your country and knowing that your country and the world will prevail in the face of true evil.
