As already stated here I liked this film but having seen it I looked at a book called The Killing Of SS Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich by Callum Mcdonald.
The book, which was well reviewed when it came out in 1989,mentions that at least one of the men's girlfriends was pregnant and that the girlfriend of Cillian murphy's character was only 19(the actress who plays her is more than 30).
The book and other sources seems to say that the men fought the SS at the church with only pistols,in this film and in operation daybreak they have Sten guns.
Perhaps if they had been shown with only pistols people might have felt it was unrealistic?.
There are several conflicting pieces of information out there, but I think the overall story they told here was pretty faithfully done.
I do believe the gunfight at the end was probably more dramatic than in real life. Like you, I read they only had pistols. However, apparently they did manage to kill or wound about two dozen Nazis.
I posted this on another thread, but with regard to Kubis’ girlfriend there some real confusion and I don’t know which way the story really went.
Maria, who was portrayed in this movie was captured, and executed. There are some reports of her being pregnant at the time of execution, but it doesn’t seem that they are definitive.
Other accounts have Anna Malinova as Kubis’ girlfriend and she was captured and died in a concentration camp.
I don’t know if that means one girlfriend was from the past, and one was from the present (“present” within the context of the movie), or if he was possibly seeing two women at the same time?
Since it seems both Anna and Maria worked in the resistance with Kubis, there is also the distinct possibility that one of them could have been just been a friend and cohort. They were working to undermine a police state, so they were necessarily living false lives anyway.
I haven’t seen anything on Gabcik’s real life girlfriend.
This is a link to another thread on this board, my second comment lists some sources of information if you are interested. You may have already found them. We really need an academic library for this sort of thing.
