Silly Accents Again?

Do they think that if they speak normal english, americans would be too stupid to figure out that the movie takes place in another country?

Funny, I didn't know Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy were "Americans."

Furthermore, find some good Czech actors and actresses at the same caliber as Dornan and Murphy and then they're in business.

I definitely know a few excellent Czech actors who would deserve an international recognition ;) If this movie was purely Czech, then they would be perfect. But I understand that if they wanted to get attention, those two are a great choice. Also, I am glad that especially this important event and one of the darkest stories in Czech(oslovak) history was filmed for an international audience.

I came to post the exact same thing. The whole practice is as silly as the accents they do. The Hollywood remake of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo try to pretend that the Swedish language didn't exist, but somehow everyone spoke with a Swedish accent.

most other countries actors usually speak with normal voices and accents even if a movie takes place somewhere else. just imagine how horrible it would be if french or russian did a movie that takes place in US and had actors speak broken french or russian with american accents)))

I suppose that may be one way to honor the original characters or in this case historical personailities. If they didn't use a fake accent then somebody else may be complaining that Operation Anthropoid was not conducted by Irishmen ( I think Murphy is actually Irish ) Furthermore, I remember one critic degrading Gerard DePardieux's performance as Christopher Columbus for sounding French instead of Italian. The use of a fake accent or not using a fake accent doesn't make much difference to me personally. Although, in some instances it may help keep the characters segragated, for "class struggle" type story.

Actually, Murphy and Dornan are both Irish. Jamie got blasted because some of his Irish accent crept in during Shades of Grey. If they had more of a generic accent it probably wouldn't have mattered. But with their heavy Irish accents it would have been very distracting.

And, don't blast me for saying "generic". As a southern American with a heavy accent, I hate people trying to sound southern. I think it's much better if they just tried to not have any accent at all if it's not authentic.

Of course, as already stated, that wouldn't have worked for these two Irish actors. Jamie did give it a good try in 50 though.

I think the main reason for the accents was continuity. With a majority Czech cast all speaking English with accents it would have sounded strange if the few English didn't sound the same. It is easier for them to put on the accents than for all the Czechs to talk fluent unaccented English.
