Reading all the accounts they must have known there was little chance of escape. Certainly colonel Moravec and president Benes knew they were likely sending them to their death as the RAF had no aircraft capable of flying the distance and landing to pick them up. I think they know they likely wouldn't escape but were determined to give themselves every opportunity. They volunteered to commit suicide with notices on their necks after Lidice.
