From Prague

I have been living in Prague, Czech republic my whole life, so this movie means a lot to me. It was really cool to see foreign actors portray our national heroes. I went to the cinema with my friends, and at the end, we all cried, it was so moving. Anyways, I'm interested in what do you guys think about the movie, and Prague in general? Wasn't the czech accent in english of the czech actors distracting? If you want to ask me anything about Prague/ Czech history, I'd be happy to asnwer your questions, from my point of view as a Czech.

Of the world cities I would like to visit St. Petersburg is first, Prague is second.

How easy or difficult is it for someone who does not speak Czech to navigate around the city on their own.

I know a little French and can understand a smattering of Russian, but I cannot read it. I possess absolutely no other language skills whatsoever.

If you have a map or a smartphone with Google Maps on it or download Mapy.cz, then it's very easy.
Prague city center is fairly small so you can visit most of the tourist spots in one day if you don't stop, then go back to the ones that you find interesting and spend more time there.
Buy a decent guide book and you'll be fine.
Also, most of the tourist hotspots are full of English speaking waiters/waitresses/shopkeepers etc who can steer you in the right direction if you get lost.

reply

Yes, it's definitely ok, nobody in Prague really expect tourist to speak Czech. And there's a really good public transport system, so moving around the city is quite easy.

I visited Prague in the early 90s, and even if at the time it was still very "soviet" like in many aspects, and not used to visitors yet , I had no problems at all, I spoke English, a bit of German...I was very young at the time, so I was also quite prone to adapt and more "adventurous" :-)
I know that now Prague is one of the top destinations in Europe, I'm sure it's very easy to enjoy it for a foreign visitor.
The Prague I saw was similar to the one in the movie...it was winter, so the town was cold, rainy, foggy, dark even...but very very beautiful in a romantic way.

I really want to visit Prague. I might apply for phd there. It would be a great experience for me. Hows life there in Prague
for a student?

reply

I'm not Czech but I've lived in Prague for 6 years now. I know this story well, have visited the church and crypt. I loved this film and thought it was very respectful to the events and these heroes. I went to see it tonight for the 2nd time with a Czech friend. She said it was a wonderful tribute, that is the perfect word for it! I also cried. Both times

I think the accent is only distracting to native speakers. It's kind of like musicians can tell if something goes a bit off in a concert performance; the rest of the audience will not notice a thing.

The accent was definitely distracting to me. I mean, I've managed to accept English speaking actors portraying other nations' heroes, because of comments like yours, where you say it makes you feel proud, but the language thing is ridiculous. I found it completely redundant and off-putting.

It was nice to see Prague on the screen, though of course nothing compares to an actual visit. I've been many times and plan to return many more.

It was a great movie. I've been listening to Radio Prague since the 1980's, In fact 3 generations of my family listened to Prague on the Shortwave. So have a great respect and appreciation for your country. This was a movie telling a story of incredible courage.

I'm from Denmark, but have visited Prague many times over the years. I am absolutely in love with the city and I don't think I will ever get tired of walking around, taking in the scenery and atmosphere. I have often found myself being emotionally moved by the city's (and country's) history and impressed by how the people have dealt with german and russian occupation - amongst other things.
This movie was wonderful, well-acted, intense and seemed respectful. I knew the story, but not as well as I thought I did, so I walked away with a feeling of both sadness and at the same time I felt very proud of theese Czech heroes (if that makes any sense).
