Operation daybreak
I have always loved the original and if you havent seen it,please find it and watch..
It really moved me and i found the simplicity and relatively low budget added to the realism..

But they didn't have subtitles to the German dialogue, which was a huge problem.
shareThe film originally had subtitles for all the German dialogue - the BBC ran the subtitled print several times - but for some reason when it was remastered they didn't include them.
"Security - release the badgers."
The subtitles to the Warner DVD release of Operation Daybreak are readily available now, synched and accurate*
*dunno what the original film subtitles actually were, these are my corrected version of someone elses' work.
I haven't seen Anthropoid yet but Operation Daybreak will be an enormously difficult target to beat - the tension just builds and builds to an almost inevitable conclusion.

Hello. Replying to an old thread.
The issue of missing subtitles for the German-language scenes of 'Operation Daybreak', on consumer-video releases, has irked me since the 1980's (when the movie was first issued, on the VHS format).
Thanks to translations of the German-language dialogue, which were published on another forum, I have produced a revised subtitle stream for 'Operation Daybreak'.
If interested, feel free to PM me for the .srt file.
Caveat - the .srt file synchs perfectly with the version of the movie I have; but may not synch with copies sourced from any one of a variety of origins.
I read somewhere that the reason behind that was so that you would feel a bit of empathy for the Czechs, You would only understand what the director wanted you to in the same way the Czechs only understood what was translated for them. I got a Korean copy years ago and they tried to add English subtitles but got a fair bit lost in translation.
shareOperation Daybreak is shown at least once a month on tv here in the UK....it`s a great film-pity about the rather annoying/jarring-keyboard based soundtrack......but it`s a gripping, well made film...can`t see the point in a remake, what can it possibly add to the story ??
shareI actually loved the music ...
shareOperation daybreak one of my very favorites I watched it many times
the 007 series director "Lewis Gilbert" did a very good work on it
the remake have no meaning.
I do understand your point of view but cannot agree with that. Operation Daybreak is bad in so many ways, naive, silly and poorly executed. It's been often reprised and I assume you've been young when they premiered it so there is a logic in your point of view. But it's very foolish to call it "original".
We in Czech Republic have similar feelings about Atentat (1964) movie. But it's incomparably better movie than Daybreak.

PM me, if you want to. I'll provide you with link to d/l it. You'll change your opinion, I'm absolutely sure about that.
The synthesiser score, haircuts, clothes and setting always put me in mind of Bowie's Berlin era. I often wonder if he saw it and it sparked something in his then coked-out mind - "this is stylish, I'm nicking the bits I like for my new image and clean-ish living Mitteleuropan lifestyle!"
shareAgreed. A far superior film to Anthropoid
