Eh too many cigs imo. Didnt actually bother me but they're just such an "easy" accessory for actors.

Yes...many many cigarettes in this film, but I think in the 40s cigarettes were largely used, especially by men, or by "fashionable" women.
Smokers % was very high till the 70s.

There can never be too many cigarettes in a 40s movie. Ever seen a film noir?
In Out of the Past the trend reaches its logical conclusion when Mitchum if offered a cigarette while already smoking one.

Can attest many people smoked back then. My own grand dad returned from that war chain-smoking filter-less cigarettes. He died from lung cancer in the 60-ties. The war got him in the end.

My Uncle came back from war as a chain-smoker of filter-less cigarettes as well. The year he died he was smoking 6 packs per day! He was a mess and was also a casualty 25 years after the war ended. It is sad ... he went over just after finishing law school and getting married. They never had kids.

That my friends is our Greatest Generation!
