Hearing something along the lines of "god is good" and such every 2 minutes really puts me off watching it.

While not being religious myself, the show is set in a time when many people (especially King Alfred) were. The show isn't making a religious statement, just an historical one. Do you get equally upset when Odin/Thor etc are mentioned?

I see a lot of mockery, but also reality here. The fat and golden clad priests and monks in their treasury vs poor folks in the villages, Uthred who is a pagan, and best of them all, but not idealized. On the other hand, Alfred passes for some cold example of a fanatic for me, on the contrary to the other characters, who are more humane.
