weak revenge

Kind of a weak revenge don't you guys think? The joke only last so long till Simon runs a DNA test on the baby, then he'll know for sure. And Robyn was gonna leave him anyway, so it would be an accidental fortune for Simon that it's not his baby (I know he still loves Robyn and blah blah, but just saying). Also with the hard evidence of the final gift (the CDs and stuff), there is no doubt Simon can launch a full investigation from cops that would lead to Gordo eventually, so there's no way for Gordo to get away with this.
All and all, a well-made movie, but the revenge isn't as masterful as the movie's tone set it to be.

reply

even if simon could get over it he could get a dna test if he somehow gets in contact with his son somehow but dna tests are pricey and if his son really is his son simon could for who knows how long think robyn could have been raped without having a baby out of that rape.

reply

He could go on Maury

reply

Pricey? You can buy a DNA Paternity test at Walgreens for $25 Pretty sure most people can afford that

reply

Gordo was wearing a mask. I don't think there is enough evidence for police to arrest Gordo.

I don't think Gordo raped her. He just `poisoned` Simons' mind just like he said on the phone. He did exactly what Simon did to him back at school. He ruined his life for `nothing`.

reply

But again...I think the point of the discussion is that he didn't really "ruin" Simon's life. The level of revenge is not the same. (if all he did was plant the idea and not rape her)

If the boy is his, then he still has to make ammends with his wife. She doenst want to see him, but with time maybe he can reflect on his mistakes and she'll change her mind.

He lost his job but hey, he can get another one.

reply

i do not want simon and his wife to make amends with his wife or if he really knows how to make amends with his wife were she would make the mistake with being weak enough to take him back.i also saw that dna test cost alot of money i think and doubt simon would want to go on tv to get a dna test for free and simon lost his reputation where if he gets another job he will get paid less and he could be stuck living in a small apartment.

reply

I think that's kinda the point. Gordon isn't a bad guy, Simon is. He has got "revenge" whilst giving Simon opportunity to change and be better.

He did ruin his life because he broke up his marriage, regardless of the child, whether that can be fixed is up to Simon.

"If God was a villain, he'd be me"

reply

If the baby was is you'd definitely have enough to arrest him. It would at least go to court, even if he wasn't the father.

reply

it's not just about the paternity. he can do a paternity test and find out who is the dad.
the question is: did he rape her? if so, is the baby gordon's or simon's? if the paternity test says that the baby indeed is simon's, gordon could still have raped her.
but the problem is, gordon wants to poison simon's mind... he will always wonder if he raped her. another thing: should simon tell her??
and, he already destroyed his life. his wife doesn't want him. and he lost his job too.

Exactly.
People are missing the point of Gordo's revenge. It wasn't about severity as much as it was about replicating the sadism that was inflicted on him by Simon.

Simon played with Gordo's head in every way possible, and ruined his life for the fun of it.
So Gordo does this in return. I don't think he raped the wife Robyn at all. It just didn't seem like he 'would' do that, he seemed to genuinely like her AND feel a little sorry for her being married to Simon.

People say it was weak revenge, but it wasn't. Gordo's only goal was to severely screw with Simon's head, and he succeeded.
Simon did the rest to himself: The Piper caught up with him in every facet of his life.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

reply

His life is temporarily ruined. He still has a son, he can get another job, life goes on.

reply

Weak revenge?

He managed to bring his bully down and literally take everything from him.

Simon has lost his job, his marriage, his reputation and doesn't know if his child is actually his all in one day. That's some prime revenge right there.

reply

that's definitely more devious and long lasting than kneecapping him and cutting off his head. i say well played, ol chap!

Larry Gaylord: "a billion people come in on a day off, and they don't flip out!"

reply

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I might well be), but Simon Losing his Job had nothing to do with Gordo, he did that all by himself. Also he lost his marriage and reputation by his own accord too, through his wife and work colleagues discovering he snidely sent those bogus emails to get the promotion, attempting to ruin yet another persons life without any remorse.

The revenge Gordo got was just the icing on the cake, he wasn't (at least directly) responsible for the majority of all that stuff, only for the potential raping and impregnating of Simon's wife without her knowing, so he isn't really such a bad guy after all :)

reply

He might have contributed to Simon's marriage ending. When Gordo went to visit Robin in the hospital, his wounds were greatly exaggerated (as evidenced by him removing and tossing the sling in the very last scene). So in Robin's mind, her husband beat the crap out of the kid he bullied in high school. That's definitely a deal breaker.

reply

I was wondering about the very end when he took off his sling! I just rewatched it for like the 3rd time and just noticed that. Makes perfect sense. Robyn wanted nothing more than for Simon to make amends with Gordo, and that just proved further that Simon did not apologize one bit but was still just a big bully and liar and she knows it.

reply

I'm pretty sure he visited her in the hospital after she already decided to divorce Simon.

reply

I absolutely agree.

reply

But that;s the point. For one brief beautiful moment he poisoned Simons mind. That was the intention and I think it is untrue. Simon is the baby's father but it doesn't matter. It will never matter because that moment Gordo won. He poisoned both Robyb and Simons mind with an idea.

reply

Not at all. Gordo had carved out a life, such as it was. He had been wronged quite badly by Simon and his cohort Greg, but settled accounts with Greg (who actually had a conscience and knew he was a bully that did wrong). In the end, Simon lost his job, his house he could never pay for without a job, his wife and the baby he had been trying so long for. The ending was perfect, Simon slumped down, defeated.

Simon faces criminal and civil liability for misrepresenting himself to his new company that just canned him, but especially to Danny McDonough whom he slandered and harmed financially and through reputation. "Sorry" doesn't cut it. Simon is going to lose it all, financially and career-wise.

Simon will never work in his industry again (marketing for security systems). He left his old job under cloudy circumstances, used his "best friend" to get this new job, and now Danny McDonough and his old company, Simon's new company that fired him, and his best friend, are all "negative references." If you have never seen that concept at work, it is astonishing how quickly bad news travels about someone who has done something unethical or immoral. There is an old (and very true, that's how sayings get old1), "A happy client tells three people; an unhappy client tells 30."

reply

He didn't misrepresent himself and has no criminal or civil liability to his old company. But certainly Danny can sue his ass for slander.

reply

Not weak but definitely left me angry because it did affected Robyn as well. It should have gone to only towards Simon and ask Robyn to be his partner in it.

This film is very similar to Butterfly on a wheel but that one had a more fair ending

reply

My reaction was quite different. Robyn is well rid of Simon. It was just a matter of time. Simon was belittling to Robyn (the names are part of the great symbolism, "glass house", "Simon" says, Robyn (best known as a sidekick, not an equal partner in a marriage)).

Simon will never change. At the end, he should have learned a lesson. Do you think he did? Does he now regret his behavior? Will he apologize ("that's not what people do, they just don't go around apologizing all the time!") sincerely to Robyn? To his best friend who he used to get a great job but destroyed his friend's credibility with his boss? To the stranger who was his competition for the great new job? To his employer who he misled intentionally?

Me neither.

reply

^^^^ This.

Also, if there's anyone out there wondering the answer to what Gordo did or did not do, the thread about his "intentions" has a great spoiler post with the likely answer to these questions (from an alternate version of the ending that has more info revealed in it).

reply

this film is very diff from butterfly on a wheel, the only similarity is someone's trying to get revenge

~ TAKE the ticket!

reply

But simon did something similar to Nick both cheated to get a promotion at their job someone was screwd because of Simon and Nick we first see Simon and Nick as good guys to latter reveal they were not that innocent.

Both had a perfect life till Tom and Gordo made their life's hell the only difference Nick just had a fling while Simon was a true bully.

reply

It's not weak. Simon can't run a test without the mother's permission, especially after they are separated. If he wanted a test he should tell his wife about it and she would ask why. Simon loses his wife and his job he spends 25 years trying to get. He has to start over by telling his wife her baby might not be his and she might got raped because of the way HE handled things. Not a chance of getting back together then.

So in conclusion Simon has two options. Taking the Dna test route and lose his wife once and for all, or leaving with the doubt and having a chance to get back together with his wife. ''Ideas that poison the mind''. Lesson learned.

reply

It was pretty clear to me him and his wife was over. And it wouldn't be THAT hard to get a DNA test, especially if they do get divorced.

reply

So how about his conscience. Him not knowing is the issue. He ruined the life of a person he loved and not complete strangers this time and it hurt. That's why he never had past friends. He didn't give a crap about anyone so he bullied them. This time he hurt his wife and that hurt him too. His wife not knowing that she might have been raped is the same. Even if the child is not his, its the same. Gordo might have raped him and the child could be his anyway...
If he got the DNA test it would prove nothing. Here's why:
Gordo's child: Raped.
Not GOrdo's child: His, but GOrdo still may have raped her... They were trying to have a child too so it could be his.
That's the problem. Was she raped or not. Who's child is it doesn't prove anything, unless it's Gordo's of course.
