Just for discussions sake, would this even be plausible? I know they said 300k in the beginning and i think they said that there was even more than they initially thought. You surely couldnt put this in your carry on, so you would have to put it in your checked bag. Does anyone think this would work?
Was she at an airport though? Or just a train station? Cause whenever I have taken a train they never check your bag or anything. Although I have never taken a train that crosses many borders.
State borers in the US don't really count as travel borders in the same sense though. It's not like crossing into another country or something so I doubt they would have checked it there. And even if they checked it the fact that they were moving out to California would probably be a plausible enough reason to have it, though might raise some red flags still
It's an interesting puzzle. These days, having a lot of cash is looked upon with suspicion. Unless Rocky plans to continue to run with criminals, or leave the country, she'll have to get a job and live a normal life. The cash would always be a nice cushion to be used in time of need.
For discussion sake, let's say she was getting on a plane with the 300k. If she was flying domestic, with the 300k packed in her suitcase ( not her carry on ), I would say she would almost certainly get away with it. They rarely if ever check domestic luggage. Now if she was lying international then I would say she would have a 50/50 shot. They usually check luggage on both ends for international. So flying with the 300k or whatever the amount was would be a pretty stupid gamble. She could get a safe deposit box and visit it when need be. She could also start a few bank accounts a deposit under 10k in each. And she could bring under 10k cash with her on the plane legally and without question. So to risk 300k by stuffing it in your luggage is retarded af. 3 new bank accounts with 9.5k deposits and 9.5k cash. More then enough money to start the foundations of her new life. Then fly back and repeat the process when needed.
There is no law against carrying any amount of cash on a plane INSIDE the US. The TSA/federal government must have reasonable suspicion to seize/hold funds. For example, a known or convicted drug dealer or someone on bail carrying a large amount of cash may be held, but in the movie it never explained she was caught or a convicted felon, with no priors.
While it is certainly foolish to carry $300K+ on an airplane (MUCH safer ways to get your cash to your destination) there is no law against it and TSA would not ask you to step aside unless reasonable suspicion which there was none for the character.
If you are traveling overseas (she's not, going to California, we can assume she's in the state) you do have to declare anything over $10,000 in the converted foreign currency, which may bring up some questions. Certain countries in Asia can be somewhat strict on bringing cash in their currency into their country. They generally want you converting there, but generally no rule against bringing in your own currency, again must declare if over the $10K amount (least for US).
So to answer your question. Yes. It's plausible and 100% legitimate.
"There is no law against carrying any amount of cash on a plane INSIDE the US. The TSA/federal government must have reasonable suspicion to seize/hold funds."
Some TSA related document states:
"When currency appears to be indicative of criminal activity, TSA may report the matter to the appropriate authorities... TSA may also note any factors related to criminal activity for purposes of notifying CBP [for international passengers] and/or law enforcement, as well as request that the individual remain accessible pursuant to such notification."
She's traveling with a minor, and presumably she is not the minor's legal guardian. I certainly had the impression the two of them were running away from home, and there might even be an amber alert out for the younger daughter.
Also, Rocky's face is still beat to a pulp.
I'd bet money that the above is more than enough for the TSA to at least be suspicious, and report her to and / or hold her for law enforcement.
Except the public announcement (when they were in the coffee shop) said 'train' not 'bus'. So there must have been a change made to the script somewhere along the way.
