shareThe "newspaper clipping" is a plot device used by screenwriters as an easy way to convey exposition to the audience, regardless of whether anyone would do this in real life or not.
I especially love it when a character keeps a clipping of the worst moment of their lives (see: Kiefer Sutherland in Mirrors, Nick Frost in Cuban Fury) so the audience knows their backstory and motivation. Seriously, why would you want to be reminded of the your most traumatic experience?? Wouldn't you just throw it away and try to move on??
