Very eerie real life home invasion / murder case.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byron_David_Smith_killings

Basically this man planned to kill two robbers who continuously broke into his home. He killed a teenage boy and girl, age 17 and 18. Quote from the article.

On April 29, 2014, Byron David Smith was found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder with premeditation and on two counts of second-degree murder after three hours of jury deliberations. He was immediately sentenced to life in prison without parole.[4] The audio recordings were named by the jurors as the biggest influence on their decision. "That was the most damning piece of evidence in my mind," Wes Hatlestad, one of 12 jurors, said following the trial. "That audio recording of the actual killings and the audio recording of Mr. Smith's interview immediately after his arrest ... pretty much convinced me that we were dealing with a deranged individual."[23]

You can find the audio of the incident on Youtube. Don't want to link it because it is very disturbing. This case really freaked me out. I think this movie might have slightly been inspired by this case. Knowing about this case made this movie much more scary. Knowing something similar happened.

These kids broke into the wrong house and were killed for it. Same goes to the kids in the film. Pretty chilling to me.

I knew about this case from the news at the time, and I also thought of it when watching this film. I would be surprised if this case had not given someone the beginning of the idea for this film.

That case also highlights the law on the matter. Yes you can defend yourself in your own home, but you can't execute people who are clearly no longer a threat to you, that's murder.
