Theory on how he got the girl

Hear me out,

Since it is said that the Rich Girl won the case because of her family's money, and that the Blind Man was left with a settlement of 300k(?), while later in the protagonists finds out that there is more than 300 grand in the safe and it was close to 2 million (?)

My theory is that the Rich Girl actually felt guilty and tried to apologize to the Blind Man by going to his house without telling anyone in her family, She then tried to offer the Blind Man more money as compensation but the blind man felt insulted instead, and in a fit of rage she took the girl then and there.

reply

I really like your explanation! Thanks!

reply

My theory is he spent the 300K to hire someone to kidnap her and hold her for ransom. The kidnappers split the ransom with the blind guy and gave the girl to him too.

reply

Why wouldnt the kidnapper split the money themselves then?

reply

Blindman hires kidnappers.
Kidnappers demand ransom from parents.
Kidnappers give blindman his cut of the ransom and the girl.

What is your question?

reply

But this doesn't explain why the blind guy had a million dollars in cash in his safe. By the way, why would anyone keep that much cash on hand??

reply

> why would anyone keep that much cash on hand??

Because he's crazy.

And you can't just go deposit a million bucks cash in the bank, they are going to want to know where you got it from. Google "know your customer"

Also, the whole movie is social commentary. He's a 1%er hoarding wealth, while the neighborhood around him goes to pot, forcing women to bear children for him against their will. And he's literally blind to it all.

reply

As resourceful as he was. It's not like he went away from his house to kidnap her. He's blind. She probably just went to his house to apologize

reply

Who the hell would go to apologise after the case has been settled? Don't be ridiculous, I'm sorry but it's just something we don't have an answer to.

But I'm pretty sure she would have told someone (parents) where she was going if she was going to apologise, which I find hugely unlikely.

reply

That's an interesting theory. I also think it's possible that he took some of that money and paid for someone to kidnap the girl. That would make about as much sense. Is it possible that the girl went to his house? Sure, but how plausible is it that she would?

reply

Stop trying to defend him. He is a sick Psycho for having her chained up down there in the first place. It doesn't matter she go off. It was an accident. The woman didn't murder his daughter. So, I feel no sympathy for him.

reply

There is no plausible explanation for why the girl was in his basement and how he was able to get away with it for so long.

The kidnapping theory cannot hold water since he would clearly be the prime suspect. The family pay a ransom but she's not returned? Nah. The police would obviously raid his house and find the missing girl within minutes... she wasn't exactly difficult to find in the basement.

Nor did she absurdly turn up at his house with $1.7m in cash and try to apologise!

The only other explanation is that "she went away" and he texted her parents masquerading as her... major problem with that is he's blind! And this could only work until they tried to call her and grew increasingly concerned before calling the police. Then we're back to point one above.

We're not offered an explanation because there really isn't one and we're not supposed to dwell on it.

reply

Actually, she did murder her so I'd say she deserved it.

Maybe some of his buddies from Special Forces kidnapped the girl for him. People in groups like that have a close brotherhood and it wouldn't be out of the question for some of his old comrades to pitch in and help when they heard how unfair his story was. Surely they'd be sympathetic. Especially with him losing vision in combat. He could have saved a comrades life when the grenade exploded. Maybe it was 2 or three of them. Maybe they helped him.

I doubt it, people like her probably run children over all the time. She got what she deserved.

Certainly possible.

That also might just be his life savings. He might have gotten some sort of disability pay from being injured in the military. His rent must be exceptionally low if he is living in a deserted part of Detroit like that. It doesnt appear that he spends much money on anything other than bare necessities either.
