Why not go to school or get a job?
Seems more honorable and less risky than robbing homes.
I'll be honest. I wanted Rocky to be impregnated and chained up for nine agonizing months.

Take a look at Money --- do you really see him going through college?
shareNo but I see him capable of learning a skill. The other two seemed intelligent enough to make it through college. Anyhow, it made me unsympathetic to their situation. Perhaps that's what the director wanted?
The thing is, in America, you can live a very comfortable life if you make an average wage.

I'm not sure about Alex, but Rocky definitely lacked the money to go to college.
shareThere are student loans. Anybody who wants to succeed in America can.

"Anybody who wants to succeed in America can" is such a naive thing to say it's actually adorable.
Okay, picture the scene: she goes to college (which in itself is unlikely if she doesn't have the funds or a decent enough high school education, but whatever) and takes out a loan. Four years later, she graduates with honours. Now she has to find a real job. In the current economic climate, this could literally take years. She needs some form of income until then, right? So gets a job, say, flipping burgers. Just to tide herself over until she finds something better (ie. related to her degree). Well, have you ever actually job hunted before? If you're naive enough to say something like "Anybody who wants to succeed in America can", then I'll assume probably not. Or maybe you got exceptionally lucky and just naively assumed this was the case for everybody. Whatever. Point is, no one who works some *beep* minimum wage service job is there out of choice, and few are there out of simple laziness.
In any case, finding a post grad job is not easy. Matter of fact it's basically a full time job in itself. Meanwhile she already has a full time job, except oh wait, it's minimum wage. And This is 'Murica, so she's trying to get by on one of the lowest minimum wages in the developed world, no less. She's probably working 40+ hours a week MINIMUM, to cover not only the basic cost of living, but also to repay her student loans, and, I'll assume, to look after her sister, since there's no way her junkie mother is raising a finger. Meanwhile, it's also suggested in the movie that she has to support her mother financially, so that's even more down the drain every month (and before you argue that she could refuse, would you want to get on the wrong side of that boyfriend?). And because she's working such insane hours, and effectively trying to raise her sister, she barely has time to look for another job. The end result? She's stuck wasting the overwhelming majority of her life in a dead end job with no money, no future, no prospects, and no sign that it's going to get better. I'm not condoning burglary, but I get why she does it, and you either have to be stupidly naive or have an almost psychopathic lack of compassion to not get it yourself. Which would you rather?
TLDR; OP is grossly misinformed on how the real world works.
They don't have to go to college. Could have gotten a job. The pay would be bad, but it would be earned honestly.
shareIf they went to school, there wouldn't be a movie.
shareyes there would have. they could have made the characters a lot different. It was easy to tell Money was going to die first and the bitch was going to live.
I would say my memory is not what it used to be. But I don't remember what my memory used to be.
she got off way too easy.

If you wanna escape an abused home as fast as you can, you do take shortcuts and Rockys shortcut wasnt right but I understand why she took it and Alex was in love with her and did everything she asked...but he really never wanted to do any of the crimes...Money was the only real criminal of the three and Rocky needed him to sell all the stolen goods.
~If the realistic details fails, the movie fails~
theyre all criminals
i've got feelings too, ya know - inbetweeners

It's one of the worst written movies I've ever seen. A girl like Rocky, if she really needed money, would be waiting tables or stripping. She's also clearly not dumb, so she would likely be doing nursing of some sort. Robbing houses to get rich so she can get out of Detroit, depending on a guy whose dad owns an alarm company he runs out of his house? That's pretty sad for burglars, to be honest. Money would also just be a drug dealer. It's a lot safer.
shareDELETED SCENE
Alex talks to his father about going to law school. His father doesn't have the money. Alex asks his father what if he could get the money for law school? His father asks him from where? Tells Alex to grow up and take a test to become a police officer.
This explains why Alex was so precise about what laws they were breaking and the consequences. He was interested in law and clearly knew the crimes they were committing. He didn't want to get into serious trouble and tried to warn his two friends.
So I guess his character did want to go to school but didn't have the money to pay for it. He thought risking his future to try and make a better future was worth it. He lost that gamble.
Money seemed pretty dumb. I doubt he would succeed at any school and he is probably too arrogant to take a job seriously enough to hold it. He doesnt seem concerned with armed robbery, so he might already have an extensive criminal record.
Rocky's backstory was that she was being dragged down by an abusive and unhealthy family situation at home. Regardless of how well the actors portrayed her situation, this is a real situation that many people in poor areas are stuck in. She certainly can't afford school, so her only chance is getting scholarships or student loans. You have to get some level of good grades to get scholarships and loans. Banks don't give loans to people that are unlikely to pass school and be able to pay them back. Scholarships arent given to mediocre students with no potential.
Getting good grades is not easy if you have a trashy family always distracting you and being a bad influence. Its much easier to concentrate on getting good grades if your family is supportive and intelligent and less so if they are abusive or stressful to be around.
Robbing houses isnt the right decision, but it can accomplish things much easier than putting in years of hard and stressful work.
